Grandma said be sweet. Mother said be nice. The gospels said do unto others. And you want to be acknowledged, and given the opportunity to do meaningful work. So where does that leave you?
Disinclined to decline. Overcommitted and underperforming.
To get the things you want in life and be respected in business, you need to step outside the comfort zone, take risks. And to do meaningful work, you have to yes to opportunity – but you also have to draw the line somewhere.
Just last year, Facebook ceo Sheryl Sandberg said, “I walk out of the office every day at 5:30 so I’m home for dinner with my kids... (but) it wasn’t until the last year that I’m brave enough to talk about it publicly.”
