Lunch & Learn with Dr. Mark LaBarge from City of Hope

Dr. Mark LaBarge, a professor and researcher at City of Hope, says his dream is to identify primary breast cancer prevention modalities that are so safe, they become common place. Join us to hear about his findings on women’s breast health.
About his research: Mark LaBarge is a Professor at the Beckman Research Institute, City of Hope, focusing on how age-related changes in the mammary gland contribute to cancer susceptibility and devising models for studying this in solid human tissue. His team seeks to create novel breast cancer risk assessment and early detection methods, and to identify targets for cancer prevention. They utilize discarded breast tissue from women of varying ages, cultivating primary stromal and epithelial cells to analyze the molecular impact of age and cancer risk. Their goal is to integrate population science with cellular and stem cell biology to comprehend cancer susceptibility in populations, rather than individuals.
Dr. LaBarge earned his undergraduate degree in Genetics at UC Davis, studying biological control methods for corky root of lettuce with Dr. Areina van Bruggen. He obtained a Ph.D. in Molecular Pharmacology from Stanford University under Dr. Helen Blau and furthered his postdoctoral training at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory with Dr. Mina Bissell, where he was supported by an American Cancer Society fellowship. Presently, he is a Professor in Population Sciences at City of Hope and the Deputy Director of the Center for Cancer and Aging. His accolades include the NIH Transition Award and the DOD Era of Hope Scholars award.
